Hosting Options

A poor web hosting service means slow load times, poor performance, and extensive downtime. You should avoid it if you can. The CloudFlare web performance will determine the outcome of your business.

The CloudFlare web performance will determine the outcome of your business. Can be worth it, or you might be better off using a hosted service.

A CloudFlare-hosted site is fast enough, but might not have all the features you might want, and the VPS hosting might make you feel like a service provider is selling you something. If you absolutely must have the cloud hosting, I’d highly recommend using a public cloud provider, like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Rackspace. They’re the ones offering the cloud services with a solid performance guarantee.

There are two important aspects to make a decision between CloudFlare and another provider. (1) Hosting and (2) pricing.

Hosting is a set of functionality and features that a company provides, and may or may not cost money. What if you want a ton of features on your site? Yes, there are some nice free options out there, but when you try to see all the features of the best hosting providers, you may get overwhelmed by the prices and services since there are options where you can get the dedicated hosting plan for your business. It’s no wonder. When you only have a certain number of pages, it really is hard to price to the amount of money you need to spend.

The second part of deciding whether to use CloudFlare vs. another hosting provider is to determine if you want a service with a dedicated server, or a cloud server. Some of the free options don’t offer dedicated servers, and some of the hosted services will only allow you to purchase a service with no dedicated server. They come in different sizes, and offer different features.

What if you are not looking to give up any extra features, but instead want the very best hosting option on the market? If that’s the case, I recommend a web hosting that offers a 100% dedicated server, which would have the highest throughput of any cloud-based hosting. A dedicated server allows for more flexibility and full control, while a cloud hosting doesn’t allow as much customization. You can use Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as other hosting services.

Price is the single most important factor when choosing a web hosting provider, but it’s not the only one. You also need to consider the reliability of the hosting provider, the level of support you expect, and also the features of your site. Check out my list of Cloud Hosting Price Comparison Chart.

Once you choose a CloudFlare web hosting, you need to configure your site for performance. There are many different web hosting configurations, so you need to choose one that fits your needs. Some sites need a bit more (such as static sites) while others require more (such as SSL). Some require a minimum number of concurrent visitors, while other websites may need as few as 10.

Most hosting providers have some sort of performance test in the back of their service. This test is run at predetermined intervals, and reveals how the hosting service has performed for a given set of websites.
